UW-Madison education major Sarah Young, who is student teaching at Madison's Jefferson Middle School, used the Wisconsin State Journal's Forum section in her newspaper unit as a model for writing opinion pieces. The letters below are from students in Young's eighth-grade language arts classes. Schools should better plan for snow days A terrible blizzard blew into southern Wisconsin on Dec. 10. The roads and sidewalks were dangerous for cars, buses and walkers. There were many car accidents and at least two people died as a result. In addition, buses needed to drive safely and slowly, therefore most were late and people were tardy for work and school. This storm followed an earlier one, and sidewalks and streets were already a mess. Madison schools should have closed.

My symptoms are a sore throat, tiredness and aches and pains. I have no congestion, but my nose only runs at night. Wierd, isn't it? Alison Struve blows her nose so much she sounds like a foghorn. Stephanie Luisier and chief photographer Randy Bise both have that "sick sound" when they talk. Was it just me or did the Badgers seem a little unfocused and unprepared for their bowl game? Perhaps it's the long layoff between their last regular season game and the contest on January 1. It was a sort of a fun game to watch, even if it was rather sloppily played. And we love it when a coach gambles and the play works, but when it doesn't we go, "what the heck did you do that for?" And with Coach Bielema going for the touchdown on 4th down instead of the fieldgoal that would have pulled his team within 1 point in the fourth quarter, he's facing some of that criticism now.

There are few things worse from a technophile's point of view than plunking down your hard earned cash on a new gadget only to find out later that it doesn't operate as promised or expected. Things get worse when you try and get the issue fixed and the manufacturer doesn't acknowledge the issue at all. This is exactly what owners of some HTC smartphones are claiming. A website has been setup called HTCClassAction.org to try and force HTC and the cellular carriers that sell affected HTC devices to remedy alleged problems with certain devices and video acceleration. The website claims that the HTC TyTn II, HTC Touch Dual, HTC Touch Cruise, HTC Wings, HTC Titan, HTC Vogue, HTC Libra, and HTC Iris as well as all the other names these phones go by are affected with the same problem.

It's called Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and it uses a laser light to destroy diseased cells in the lining of the esophagus. After a series of tests at Mayo, my mother and I met with Dr Wang's right hand, a Nurse Practitioner named Lynn Borkenhagen (Kinney) who coincidentally is a Wausau native. With compassion and clarity, she explained my mother's condition and helped us understand her options for treatment. Lynn told us my mother's condition had already developed into early-stage cancer. The good news was that it was a relatively small area of cancer and it didn't appear to have spread to any lymph nodes or other organs in her body. That was the moment I took my first deep breath in weeks. The next day Dr. Wang performed a new procedure called Endoscopic Mucosal Resection. Using a special scope inserted through her mouth, Dr Wang was able to lift up the damaged lining of my mother's esophagus, pinch together the cancerous area and clip it off.
