DIA's smart new design works

People aren't born knowing how to look at art. The DIA mostly avoids sacrificing the art on the altar of accessibility. I'm smitten with the pull-out labels and booklets on pedestals in front of many works, clarifying, say, the opaque symbolism in a Renaissance painting.

I find the lift labels more gimmicky. The dozen videos, touch screens and other high-tech devices? Placement is generally discreet, and a few are revelatory, including an exhilarating film of an African masquerade ceremony. A small gallery exploring tenets of modernism pushes the envelope with projected labels over the art. I'm agnostic on the projections but willing to live with them in a segregated environment.

The museum plays down traditional art history in favor of stories connecting the art to everyday life.

Boom Looms In Sundance

Mark Pellington's "Henry Poole Is Here"; and the coming-of-age tale "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh," one of three films from Michael London's Groundswell Prods. (Miramax's "Smart People" and Overture's "The Visitor" are the others).Foreign films usually aren't big sellers -- last year's $4 million Searchlight/Weinstein Co. buy of "La Misma Luna" aside -- but in the coming days, the Danish identity-swap thriller "Just Another Love Story," the Russian missing-woman saga "Mermaid" and the Mexican sci-fi tale "Sleep Dealer" are titles that insiders say deliver the goods.Documentaries, meanwhile, will try to overcome market skepticism this weekend when Nanette Burstein's study in adolescence "American Teen," Stacy Peralta's gang film "Made in America," the slavery docu "Tales of the Trade" and Chris Waitt's first-person "A Complete History of My Sexual Failures" debut in Park City.Saturday afternoon also will see one of the most commercial and expensive movies ever to bow at the fest: 2929 Entertainment's $30 million-plus production "What Just Happened?" a Hollywood comedy-drama directed by Barry Levinson that stars such A-listers as Robert De Niro and Bruce Willis.John Sloss, the Cinetic Media principal who's selling the film, said execs think this will be the right venue because it will debunk any misconception that the film is too insidery.

Grainy video shows Amy Winehouse inhaling fumes from some sort of pipe

Last month, the troubled singer, whose songs include Rehab and You Know I'm No Good, was photographed walking outside her London home wearing a bra and jeans, with no shoes, looking upset.

Winehouse attracted yet more attention in court Friday when she blew Fielder-Civil kisses and shouted out, "I love you handsome, gorgeous one," as he was led away after facing charges of assault and conspiracy.

Fielder-Civil, 25, is accused of attacking a pub landlord and then later conspiring with him to withdraw as a witness at the trial. Fielder-Civil pleaded innocent to the charge of assault, and is expected to plead to a charge of perverting the course of justice next month.

Winehouse is nominated for six Grammy Awards including best new artist and album of the year for her acclaimed disc Back to Black, plus record and song of the year for the brassy hit Rehab.

LASIK Works Well, According To Long-term Study Of Highly Myopic ...

ScienceDaily (Dec. 30, 2007) — Laser surgery to correct vision problems has been in use since the early 1990s. Photorefractive Keratotomy (PRK) is typically used to correct low to moderate myopia, while laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is preferred for high myopia corrections. Although over 18 million LASIK procedures have been performed worldwide, there is still some controversy regarding the maximum correction possible and efficacy with this technique.

FAQ on erectile dysfunction

Yes, it is, in the sense that many men have erectile problems, especially at times of great changes in their lives. In fact it is probably more widespread than people realise, as proven by the popularity of anti-impotence drugs on the market. It is estimated that men with erectile problems take an average of five years before going to the doctor. It should not be ignored, as erectile problems often point to other physical problems, such as diabetes.

What makes an erection problem occur?

An erection begins with sensory and mental stimulation. Impulses from the brain travelling down the spinal column and impulses from the nerves in the penis relax smooth muscles in two spongy cylinders that run the length of the penis, parallel to the urethra (the conduit for urine and semen).

Colleges rely on part-timers

College students are getting a raw deal, a recent New York report asserted. The problem is they're taking too many classes from part-time, or adjunct, professors. But that same report unwittingly revealed something about how higher education is more culpable than it likes to admit when it comes to creating the problem. The issue is a huge one in higher education far beyond New York, with about half of the nation's college faculty now on part-time contracts. Adjuncts are cheaper for colleges, but they often lack the time and resources for focused teaching, and research shows students' performance suffers if they are taught by part-timers too often. In its report last month, a 30-member commission called for New York's state (SUNY) and city (CUNY) systems to alleviate the over reliance on adjuncts by hiring 2,000 more full-time faculty for their 87 campuses.
